Director's
Commentary
I recently
swallowed one of those "How to draw manga stuff" books
which I found quite useful. I have absolutely no intention of
taking the comic in a manga direction (there are plenty of webcomics
out there that go that way very early on), but it was quite useful
for setting up figures and proportions and such. Whereas I'm not
going to pretend that I am flawless at drawing the human form,
I do feel the book has put me on the right track.
I always
get quite frustrated with "how to draw" books that have
things to say about human anatomy, as they have a tendency to
go into huge detail about the face and the head and then follow
it up with "now draw the body" with no real detail given
to that rather crucial section of the drawing process at all.
As a result, a lot of my early attempts at drawing characters
looked like disproportionate mutated stick figures with overly
detailed facial features.
If anyone
that's reading this is a budding artist or illustrator of some
kind, although I'm in no real position to give advice, I will
say that it's a learning curve and don't give up straight away.
I haven't, and I'd like to think I'm not closed off to improvement.
